The Guardian

There is a legend of a man who lives beneath the sea. He is a fisher of men, the last hope of all those who have been left behind. Many survivors claim to have felt his gripping hands beneath them; pushing them up to the surface; whispering strength until help could arrive.
But this, of course, is only a legend.

Random thoughts...

Good things should come in fast-forwarded sequence, like in films where months and years fly by in seconds and suddenly the novice has become an expert. Bad things are welcome to take their own time.

You meet someone who thinks like you, who gets along well with you, then one day you begin to wonder where in your life they really fit in, and realise that this is not the end, there is more to come, and that before long you're going to end up in a place very far from where you are today.

History repeats, as many times as possible. But some students refuse to learn.

Life teaches the same lessons to everyone. Some learn fast, some take a lifetime.

A family is as old as its youngest member and as wise as its eldest.

Superstitions that keep hope alive are good.

Life, as I get to see every day, is one big fuzzy logic! But when I look closely, even in the chaos I can find an order.

Thoughts for the Week

1. Seek harmony, happiness will follow. Not necessarily the other way around.

2. Give advice. But do not look back to see if it is being followed.

3. There are no coincidences. There are no accidents. There is only Destiny.

4. Don't toss a lot of Sorrys around. Their value decreases with each use.

5. It does not matter if half the people on this Planet are in a situation worse than yours. What matters is that you're in one.

Thoughts for the Weekend

1. The difficulty with neglecting an opportunity, however tiny, is that, if it ever comes back, it would be of no use.

2. Almost every problem has a solution, but it doesn't make its appearance till the time is ripe, however hard you try. But one should keep trying, lest the solution should find a closed door when it finally does materialise.

3. There are times when people need a taste of their own medicine, just to make them open their eyes - if not for anything else.

4. Cruel irony of life: You receive a message full of promise in its every word, yet you have the sinking feeling that one more door is closing on your face.

5. Little four-year-olds ask questions we have long forgotten to ask.

6. Every journey begins with a single step. Some end with it.

7. Whether you want to pluck flowers or get pricked by a thorn defines your way of seeing things.

8. The best part of writing a story is choosing its title.

9. Anyone who does not let you be yourself is not good for you. Or, they are so good that they want you to change for the better.

10. Good intentions don't always imply satisfactory outcomes.

Thoughts for the Weekend

1. If we could only let go of the Whys and the Wherefores, Life could be so much simpler!

2.  When we want Time to go slow, it flees by on horseback. When we want it to race, it finds itself a snail to carry it!

3. The cordiality shown by two people is directly proportional, and the taken-for-granted-ness inversely proportional, to the distance between them.

4. Seeing the steam rise from my cup of tea, my son asks, "Does the steam go up to where God sits?"

5. Suppressed anger wreaks more havoc than the explosive kind.

Thoughts for the Weekend

1. Every challenge is a hurdle on one side and a stepping stone on the other.

2. Every obsession has an end. The only difference is in how long each lasts. The moment one admits to having an obsession, it begins its decline.

3. Some relationships are like quicksand. They may even look beautiful from the outside, they make you want to jump just right into it. You do not realise till you are truly sucked in, that it requires effort and will to escape.

4. All feelings are mutual. Except when one person does not know of the existence of the other.

5. A good writer knows he is good. A bad one believes he is.

Thoughts for the Week

I usually post the "Thoughts" on the Weekend, but the last two days I have been suffering from Blogger's Block, so the semi-brilliant ideas refused to flow in. There was no dearth of Tweeting ideas where I have been chatting to glory but that's a different tale. Am back to my abnormal self, so here is the Weekly Dose of Wisdom.

1. The less we depend on someone else, the easier for us to handle their negligence or thoughtlessness.

2. My son lost the little bulging eye of his favourite plastic sticker (free with Sunfeast Pasta Treat) and went around complaining, "I lost an eye!"

3. If you knock at 400 doors, 4 may open. All the 400 doorkeepers will promise that the door will be opened soon, though.

4. My son asks me, What does God do when He is thirsty? Where does He drink water from?

Thoughts for the weekend

1. Little children can teach their parents Patience the way no one else can.

2. Life always gives us days in pairs. A bad day for every great one. Or perhaps, a great day for every bad one.

3.
Just because you know cooking, you can't make great dishes. You need to be familiar with the knives, pots and pans as well.

4.
The love of parents for their children is one-way traffic. It never gets reciprocated in the same amount, however one can see it manifest itself when the children have children of their own.

5. You can't please everyone. Just as everyone does not try to please you.

Thoughts for the weekend

1. My Father's advices and my Mother's home remedies seemed so incredulous and insignificant in my childhood, now I find I rely on them more than ever.

2. Little kids are very smart, because they pick up everything learnt by their parents and grandparents by the time they are five.

3. I am glad of all the afflictions I suffered from in my childhood, for it helps me to understand what my son goes through in his days of illness.

4. When the traffic signal is green, the vehicles coming from miles away pick up speed trying to hop the light before it turns red.

5. The thought that you have nothing to lose gives you the motivation to do your best.

Thoughts for the weekend

1. Someone once told me, If you can't beat them, laugh at them.

2. If creativity wakes you up at night, get up and create.

3. I am happy that sometimes my son does not listen to me and adamantly keeps up after what he wants to do - because at the end of it he emerges having learnt to do something by himself.

4. There is a good amount of (bad amount, more like) road rage gallivanting around the streets today. And it is not going to do any good to anyone.

5. If you want something very badly, keep up after it for hours, days and weeks on end. By all theories of probability, persistence and coincidence, you will finally get at least a slice of what you wanted. The magic words are "keep up after it" and "at least a slice."

Appointment in Samarra

I had read this story years ago, and loved it. Happened to remember it recently and Googled for it.

There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.

5 Thoughts for the weekend

1. I have noticed that when my son asks me, "Can I do it?" I agree most amicably - almost irrespective of what he wants to do - but if he does it without asking, I get mad at him. I believe he knows it, too.

2. There are stupid Questions, stupid Answers and stupid People. However, all three don't necessarily occur together.

3. Mothers don't have eyes on the back of their head. They just know when and where and how to look. Because they have been where you are, and done everything you do.

4. Even the most solitude-loving and independent of us needs the reassurance of company at times.

5. Some adolescents think that middle-aged people were born directly into their middle age, and have no experience of going to college or hanging out with friends.

Thoughts for a weekend

1. Kindness does not expect gratitude in return. The moment one expects a 'thank you', his action stops being kind.

2. Bad things tend to look worse and good things to lose their lustre as days pass by. We get over them both, anyway, after a while.

3. A person who says "Life is tough" is, in all probability, having a better life than one who says "Everything is fine".

4. A bad experience is worth a million advices.

5. Sometimes we get depression for free, sometimes we pay a huge amount to get our day ruined.

Thoughts for the weekend

1. The time in my present goes slowly, in my past fleets by and in my future haphazardly.

2. A woman becomes a nagging wife because an unkempt house, ill-mannered children and irresponsible husband are considered her failures.

3. My son asks me, Does God sleep at night?

4. The power of gossip is that no one wants to hear it, but everyone knows all about it and more.

5. Sometimes Life takes us up to dizzying heights and makes us look down and experience vertigo, just to keep us from being carried away in the comforts of our stable life.

Fathers Day

I am told by innumerable advertisements and articles in the newspaper that today is "Fathers Day".

I borrow the following text from today's Bangalore Times.

Dharmendra started by confessing with the honesty that only a strong and simple man can possess that he didn’t know what Father’s Day was. “As a boy, I feared my father who was a disciplinarian, and was naturally close to my mother. The day my father showed me a little affection, it was Father’s Day for me,” he said simply.
...

And what was the most important thing Dharmendra had learned as a father? He paused, tears in his eyes now, the pain of a strong man unashamed to show his emotions, then said, “I learned not from my own sons, but from Fardeen Khan recently that you should tell your father you love him before it is too late. I didn’t do that. Now my father is no more. And I know from Sunny and Bobby, what he wanted of me....”

Happy Fathers' Day!

Memoirs 6 - Mistakes

The most common way (but not necessarily the best) to get over one's mistake is to ignore it, force oneself to forget it and hope that the hurt it caused to another will heal with time.

Thought for the day

Experience means finding oneself in a territory that looks devastatingly similar to the one from which you had run away years before, and remembering to tread cautiously so as to avoid a similar calamity.

Quote for today

"If a man doesn't delight in himself and the force in him and feel that he and it are wonders, how is all life to become important to him?"
